For those new to quilting – here is a generalised list of commonly used quilting patterns:
1. Edge-to-Edge (E2E) Patterns: (Most often used and can be light, medium or densely quilted)
- Pantographs or Computertised Designs: Continuous quilt pattern covering the entire quilt from edge to edge.
2. Custom Quilting Patterns: (More intense quilting, unique and beautiful – not always available)
- Block Designs: Each block of the quilt is quilted individually with a unique pattern.
- Sashing and Border Designs: Different designs can be applied to sashing strips and borders.
- Background Fills: Fill patterns like stippling, meandering, or swirls to fill the background around appliqué or other quilted elements.
Tips to be used when choosing a pattern:
- Size: Consider the size of your quilt; smaller quilts benefit from denser patterns, while larger quilts can accommodate larger, open designs.
- Style: Traditional quilts might suit classic designs, while modern quilts look great with geometric or abstract patterns.
- Theme and Intention: The purpose of the quilt. Is it a bed quilt, a wall hanging, or a showpiece? The purpose can influence your choice of patterns.
