Patterns For Long Arm Quilting

For those new to quilting – here is a generalised list of commonly used quilting patterns:

1. Edge-to-Edge (E2E) Patterns: (Most often used and can be light, medium or densely quilted)

  • Pantographs: These are continuous line quilting patterns that cover the entire quilt from edge to edge. They are stitched using a pantograph template attached to the machine.
  • Computerized Designs: Advanced long arm machines are equipped with computer systems that allow for the use of digital designs. These designs cover the quilt uniformly from one edge to another.

2. Custom Quilting Patterns: (More intense quilting, unique and beautiful – not always available)

  • Block Designs: Each block of the quilt is quilted individually with a unique pattern. This approach allows for creativity within individual blocks.
  • Sashing and Border Designs: Different designs can be applied to sashing strips and borders, enhancing their visual appeal.
  • Background Fills: Quilters use various fill patterns like stippling, meandering, or swirls to fill the background around appliqué or other quilted elements.

Tips for Choosing YOUR Pattern:

  • Quilt Size: Consider the size of your quilt; smaller quilts might benefit from denser patterns, while larger quilts might look better with larger, open designs.
  • Quilt Style: Traditional quilts might suit classic designs, while modern quilts often look great with geometric or abstract patterns.
  • Theme and Intention: Consider the purpose of the quilt. Is it a bed quilt, a wall hanging, or a showpiece? The purpose can influence your choice of patterns.
